Practice areas

Three areas carry most of the firm's work. They are not run as separate departments: a commercial agreement that fails becomes litigation, and an election petition is litigation conducted against a statutory clock.

The general practice

Matters the firm handles outside the three principal areas. Where one of these develops into proceedings, it is conducted by the same litigation practice.

  1. Employment and labour Wrongful and constructive termination, staff injury claims, disputes over contractual terms, and industrial relations. Acting for employers and for employees, though never on both sides of the same matter.
  2. Criminal matters Defence in criminal proceedings, including allegations of corruption and matters of homicide and manslaughter. Bail applications, trial defence, and watching briefs for complainants.
  3. Property and land Title investigation and perfection, conveyancing, landlord and tenant disputes, and proceedings over title and possession.
  4. Family matters Matrimonial causes, custody and maintenance, and the administration of estates.
  5. Fundamental rights Applications for the enforcement of fundamental rights under the Constitution.

Sectors and how they change the advice

Where a client operates in a regulated sector, the sector's own rules often decide the question before the general law is reached.

Telecommunications

Licence conditions, infrastructure and interconnect agreements, consumer protection claims, and dealings with the sector regulator. Obligations attaching to a licence commonly override what the parties would otherwise have agreed between themselves.

Banking and finance

Loan documentation, the creation and perfection of security, and recovery proceedings. Central Bank of Nigeria guidelines and the requirements for registering a charge determine whether security is worth what a lender believes it to be.

Manufacturing and FMCG

Distributorship and supply agreements, factory and standards regulation, labour relations across a large workforce, and product liability defence.

Private and family enterprises

Closely held companies where ownership, management and family are the same people. Disputes tend to arrive as a company law question and a succession question at once, and both have to be answered together.

Which desk should take this?

Describe the matter and we will route it. If a limitation period or a statutory filing window applies, say so at the outset.
