Naming the desk in your first message saves a step. If you are unsure, describe the matter and we will route it.

  1. Election matters Petitions, appeals and pre-election questions. Include the date the result was declared, or the date of the primary.
  2. Commercial desk Agreements, corporate governance, banking and finance, employment. Sending the document itself is the most useful first step.
  3. Litigation desk Civil and criminal proceedings, appeals and arbitration. Include any dates on which time is running.
  4. General practice Property, family, estates, fundamental rights, and matters that do not fall neatly into the desks above.

What happens after you write

So you know what to expect, and by when.

  1. 01 Your enquiry is routed It goes to the desk that handles that kind of matter. Where a statutory time limit applies, it is treated as urgent.
  2. 02 A conflict check is run Before any advice is given, the firm checks that it does not already act for another party with an interest in the matter. Where a conflict exists, we tell you and decline.
  3. 03 A conference is scheduled We meet to review the facts and the documents, and to establish what you want to achieve. Bring everything in writing that bears on the matter.
  4. 04 Scope and engagement are confirmed You receive the scope of work and the basis of charge in writing. An attorney-client relationship arises only when a written engagement agreement is signed by both parties.

Before you write.

Do not send confidential or privileged material with a first enquiry. Contacting the firm does not by itself create an attorney-client relationship, and until a conflict check has been run and an engagement agreed, material you send is not protected as it would be in an existing retainer.
